Hospital Pharmacy Professional Committee of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association Working Group of Multidisciplinary Guidelines for the Rational Use of Topical Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs for Musculoskeletal Pain, Department of Pharmacy, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science & Technology, Wuhan, P.R. China, Hubei Province Clinical Research Center for Precision Medicine for Critical Illness
Topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the major drugs to manage musculoskeletal pain. However, there’s no evidence-based recommendation about the dosage and administration, drug-drug interactions, administration in special population or other pharmacology-related content. To tackle the inadequate applicability of current guidelines in clinical practices, the Hospital Pharmacy Professional Committee of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association will develop standard guidelines for the rational use of topical NSAIDs in musculoskeletal pain through multi-disciplinary collaboration. The guideline will be formulated and reported by strictly following the steps specified in the WHO Handbook for Guideline Development. The guideline project team will apply Delphi method to establishing the PICO (population, intervention, control, outcome) questions, conduct systematic search and collate evidences. Based on the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) evidence recommendation table, the recommendations will be formulated in accordance with such factors as balance of pros and cons suggested by best available evidences, evidence quality, patient preferences, values and cost-effectiveness, etc. The guideline should be perfected via internal discussion in the guideline development group and external review, so as to finally develop an evidence-based guideline. Moreover, the guideline will focus on the most important issues concerned by the clinical medical professionals and patients with musculoskeletal pain when using the topical NSAIDs. Therefore, it will be a highly instructive and high-quality guideline for clinical practice, ultimately promotes the rational application of topical NSAIDs in clinical settings.
